Laptop not getting to welcome screen

i'd start booting off a live linux cd or usb, because it is (a) the least amount of work (b) narrows it down a bit to windows or hardware

also I would take the computers hdmi and plug it into the tv and see if that show anything when the screen is blank

Your problem is a bit too weirdly intermittent... like a faulty screen open sensor, or trying to install updates and failing then rolling back?

How are the error logs looking in event viewer?

Thank you. I doubt you'll be surprised to know that my OP seems to have exerted an influence on the laptop, which has ever since been behaving perfectly!

Plan A now is to get myself up to speed with all the suggestions and links kindly given, wait for it to act up again, and come back to this thread with the results of my investigations.
