Halifax OTP issues

Anyone with Halifax credit card had issues receiving a OTP?

I tried buying a phone online the other day and it took me to Halifax Secure by MasterCard, and wanted a OTP. I tried it twice but nothing ever came through. My mobile displayed was correct.

I then used my Santander card and a OTP came through instantly.

    I've seen the error:

There is a problem with some of the information you have submitted.
Please amend the fields highlighted below and re-submit this form.

and Please select an option is shown even though I've selected a telephone number in Tell us which number you'd like us to call you on page across all LBG online banking services even though my number settings have not changed for years.

I'd suggest the banks/BBA/UK finance have a distributed phone number blacklist just like they have a list of sort code/account number combinations they don't like.
  • Since 30th August I've started having problems nearly every time I try to make online payments using my Halifax accounts.

I had a card payment to National Savings decline.

    Council tax (Crapita/Lambeth Council) declined

Ovo Energy accepted (but this was for £50 - maybe below the threshold, or maybe Haifax like Ovo Energy)

On Monday I spent an hour in branch, followed by another hour on the phone and the Fraud section by-passed Visa secure and got my council tax and bank payments made.

Now it's back to business as usual - I tried to to make a £50 payment to someone via Western Union yesterday and my cards are blocked again.

The problem is that I do not have a mobile phone. Up until 5 years ago I did, and Halifax had the number on their system.

Even though I have removed the mobile number from my account, and so have the Fraud Section of Halifax, Visa Secure still persists in sending an OTP message to a mobile number which either doesn't exist, or now belongs to another customer.

    Are all banks like this?

Use Faster Payment from your Halifax account.

An ex-colleague used to pay her rent via debit card and had an issue when it authorised but declined to go through. She didn't have the funds to try again and had to beg her landlord for breathing room.

The problem in my case is the Halifax are sending SMS messages to a non-existent mobile phone number. The Halifax website says they call your landline or mobile. Not in my case - they only call a mobile I gave up 5 years ago.

Regarding Lambeth Council Tax - they accept cheques (in person or by post), direct debit or debit cards. They do not accept faster payments.
  • I've just had this happen to me today when buying a computer from PCWorld (I know, that was the only store that had this particular model in stock) :D

The number it had sent the OTP code to was out of date by some 10 years or so! All my details are correct on my Halifax account though. I paid by PayPal with the very same card and no problems.

I have had problems with Halifax before when they've not updated their records correctly. They seem to store phone numbers in multiple places and only when you find someone who knows the systems do they look around and update it in all the places they need to.
  • Thanks, I'll give them a ring :)
  • Still having issues with this. It's actually my Mums card. So when I try to purchase anything online Halifax Securecode is trying to send a OTP to a mobile number that we don't recognise. (it could be a very old number though) All contact details are up to date in my mums online account, rather annoying.
