HSBC launch of their new promotion. Just been into branch to sign up as a new customer. I was told they were under staffed and unable to deal with my application. Three people in the branch and four members of staff. I was told I could complete it online and then come back another day to verify my identity. Great first customer experience.

Not sure why you'd need to verify your identity afterwards? Personally I find applications to be far easier online than in branch so I'd just go with that it you can.

There are far better banks to use than HSBC for customer service, and I wouldn't consider switching my main account to them, but if you have a spare account and can complete the application who can moan at a free £175.

Ive done an online switch to First Direct (owed by HSBC) and it was the most hassle ive ever had opening a bank account
Normally you just sign up & cross check name & address with electoral register & current bank account for ID. Then sign up for online banking, pick user name & password. Job done.

First Direct had to take a selfie, take photo of drivers licence. Wait a week. Then the registering for online banking was the most palava ive ever experienced. Need to phone up to set a phone password which is then used to send a verification text which is then used for a verification verification text which is then used for your password which is then used for your digital (actual) password.

Im looking to switch one of my Tesco accounts to either HSBC or M&S (also hsbc owned) and probably going to go through all this again, grrrr
