Companies asking for £10 to perform checks

Options
Hello!

I have contacted several companies to inform me as to whether I have unknowingly paid PPI and several companies have replied that it would cost me £10 to perform these checks. Is that correct?

Also, does anyone have a list of direct email addresses for all companies at all?

Many thanks for your help!

    no, checks are done free.

I think they might be referring to Subject Access Requests which did carry a £10 fee prior to GDPR, however they're now free of charge and no business should be charging for them.

best way is to visit each lender's website and complete a PPI check request (most have them at this point) and they'll come back to you with a yes or a no.

    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)

They should be free unless "s the request is deemed to be manifestly unfounded, excessive or repetitive in character".

If you are adopting a scattergun approach and don't evennknow if you were a customer this could be deemed an unfounded request and therefore chargeable.
  • Hi BoGoF,
No, I am only approaching companies that I have had an account with. But that would be understandable if I hadn't been a prior customer.
Thanks for confirming they should be free.

If they have told you that their fee is £10 then that will be correct.

If you were to request a DSAR yourself, it costs nothing. Its likely the CMC is pocketing the £10 now.

  • Hi dunstonh,
Thanks for your message. I’m sorry but I don’t understand the acronyms. I am requesting them to check myself, not through an agency. Which way do I need to find out myself whether I have paid PPI without being charged?
    Thanks in advance,

Sorry, I thought you meant you were using a third party claims company and they were making the charge. If you are going direct to the bank/lender then there is no charge.

just ask the bank/lender if you had PPI. It is as simple as that. Many of the bank's websites have a form to fill in online.
