If your Dad's (the household) bringing in £100k...why is he letting your Mum carry an interest bearing CC balance of £18k?? Are they still in a relationship??
Is he servicing other debts??How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -

How does someone without an income get a card with at least a £18k limit?
How does she manage £500 repayments and what has the money been spent on?0 -
Thank you to all the helpful replies, I am very grateful! The case is closed so we will look for a BT card, Virgin have told us its possible with her as a secondary card holder.
Seashell, yes they are still married. He is servicing other debts..like i said, he is very old fashioned and thinks he can sort it all out without asking for help! Equally my mum is old fashioned is that she has been happy to have him sort it out!
The £500 payments are coming from him, he's not savvy enough to know doing a BT will help.
jonesMUFC...if you read it properly you will see she had a credit card from when she WAS employed.
Thanks all!0 -
Do you know the whole picture about their finances??
Even with a good income, if his levels of debt are high in comparison, he may also struggle to get a lower or 0% apr CC
If they are making at least the minimum payments on their debts, then if he chooses not to try and get better deals, or accept your help to reduce the debt, I'm not sure how much you can do, sadly. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
Is it possible for your Dad to apply for a credit card and then to add your Mum as an extra cardholder? (or just add your Mum as an extra cardholder, if his current cc provider has a BT offer)?Hi Shiny76 - you have interpreted it right!
He will definitely help, but my next question is can you balance transfer between accounts that have different names? I guess the only answer is to speak to the provider!0 -

At some point, Mum be the surviving spouse - probably better for her to keep a credit card in her name as long as Dad can be encouraged to get the debt paid off.0 -
Last time I did a BT all I needed was the credit card I was moving it from, the old card provider just sees a payment to the card and the new one, a debt - can't see how they'd know you were moving it from another person
Been 10 years since I dealt with balance transfers but we would say no if the customer said it was someone else’s credit card. However if they kept it quiet it wouldn’t prevent the transfer. Like you say, it’s just a form of payment.
Might have been tightened up these days though.0
