Hi,
Son has a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Vista, problem is he cant get it to recognise the microphone on his combined headset
He has checked all the drivers are up to date. He cant find any mute option on the control panel, even with the recording vol at max no sound is recognised. Headset & Mic work fine on main PC with no problems - XP running on this machine.
If he plugs the headset on hubbys laptop (the same model)running XP it brings up a window, which allows you select line or mic, but nothing like this appears on the same machine running Vista.
Any advice gratefully received.
Hope you can help?
Cheers

then make sure that the mic is secected as the recording device in the volume control properties on the recording side of things.
ohh and that it is connected to the correct port on the back of the pc they should be colour coded.0 -
Yep,
Done all that, still no joy.
Have also looked on the Dell support form, looks like we might not be alone.
Will keep trying, thanks for your help.

get your cheap bud earphones out and plug it into the mic socket, scream into the correct bud and it should work, the other bud gives nothing (normal), so hold the side-by-side
.
Also, the line-in is set to max and the mute box is unticked???GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.
