View a used car in newcastle before few days and put down £1000 pounds deposit to be collected in 2 days time giving the dealership to prepare/clean the car. They found an issue with dashboard light and told me they are fixing it and hence delay in hand over but not specifying time it would take.

I need car in 2 days days time for journey over bank holiday. If they don't get the car ready i will have to rent. my question is

- can i ask them to refund the deposit? so i can go an buy some other car

- should i ask them to compensate for rental car due to delay from their side?

what are my options? appreciate your help. Thx

Yes you can ask them to refund the deposit, although whether they will or not depends on the terms you agreed to when you handed over the deposit.

You can ask them to compensate you for the rental car costs but they're under no obligation to give you anything and I would think they're highly unlikely to do so. It's your choice to be buying a car just before you absolutely need to use it.

I would be wanting to know a few more details for starters - what dash light? is this an engine warning light? if so, what error was logged for it to trigger.

What car is it? is it a diesel by any chance? Could it be a DPF warning that has popped up?

It is a vauxhall astra petrol turbo engine, and the sales guy didn't provide much information on what exactly has gone wrong. said something was wrong in display near speedometer.

if the car is not available for me on agreed(not in writing) date would it not mean they could not fulfil the contract.

Possibly, but can you afford to buy elsewhere if they prevaricate over returning your deposit?

confirmation of refund is must before buying another one, even if i could afford to lose £1000!! (although not going to happen until may be i win a lottery:)).

Agreed, not guaranteed. Even harder to proove so without documents (which is quite frankly a bit weird, the give you them with the deposit documents usually).
