Written off loan problem!

Hi All I am after some help!
In October 2018 the last bit of debt I had was written off by AA loans, I couldn’t believe it as this was for 14k. The AA marked my credit file as settled and confirmed on the phone on 3 separate occasions (I have all dates and times of the calls) that this was written off but refused to send it in writing because it was not settled my me. I then cancelled my direct debit I had with them for a reduced amount.
Yesterday I received a letter from a debt collection agency Cadbot saying that they have purchased the debt and I now owe them the 14k! I called them immediately and explained what had happened and told them that the debt was written off. They have put the account on hold but said I must provide proof of this. I called an old number I had for the AA and got a call center in India! The guy at the end of the phone said I have not spoken to the AA and my last contact with them was September 2017! This was not true and I asked for his manager only to be told the account is with cadbot and they will no longer deal with me. Today I called the number what I got the conformation from in October that the debt was written off, I spoke to someone in a Scottish call center and again had it confirmed that the debt is written off and they in fact owe me 2 months payments back and are refunding me! They have still refused to send me a letter of confirmation of the write off though. I am now stuck as cadbot say if can’t provide written proof they will take action against me and the AA say it’s written off and are giving me a refund.
I have also today been notified by Equifax of a change in my credit file and the AA have now removed the settled marker and have also removed the whole loan off my credit file! I am stuck and have no clue what to do next, citizens advice will be my next point of call but any help would be appreciated. I obviously don’t want to give cadbot a penny as I was under the understanding this was now gone.

AA Financial Services Limited (AAFS) acts as a credit intermediary and introduces customers to Bank of Ireland (UK) plc as its exclusive loans provider.
The AA could not have written off the loan as they did not lend you the money; Bank of Ireland did.
Why should they have just decided to write off the £14K anyway? Very generous of them.

When I took out the loan it was the bank of scotland who underwrite their loans. They are the ones who have written it off. They have a department who deal with the old loans as the AA no longer use them. I have the voice recordings as confirmation as GDPR allows me to obtain these, in the 6 recordings each different person confirms the loan is written off. If what you have said is correct how could the AA have sold the debt in the first place?

They didn't sell the debt, the provider of the finance eg Bank of Scotland sold it (maybe the decision was taken with AA).

Its a mess of a situation, hope you get it sorted.

How sure are you it was BoS who underwritten the loans last year ?

The loan was very old (2005) I have been dealing with BOS / Lloyd’s banking group over it for the last 3 years. According to cadbot it’s the AA who sold them the debt. Lloyd’s/ BOS have confirmed I don’t owe the money. I’m a bit confused by it all and a bit lost with how to solve it all.

It sounds like either you've misunderstood what they're saying or they're using the wrong terminology when referring to the loan.

It's obviously been sold on and as a result it wouldn't be wrong for them to say "you don't owe us anything" but I wouldn't refer to it as being "written off."

If Cabot are asking for proof and you have recording of the calls where they say it is written off couldn't you send these to them as proof?

They have asked for written proof. I am forwarding the recordings over. BOS exact words were “ we have made the decision to write off your loan” they stopped requesting payments and are refunding me the 2 payments I made after the decision. After my phone call with them yesterday they are still saying it’s written off and I no longer need to pay it. I seem to be going round in circles with them and not really getting anywhere.

Presumably you're forwarding the recordings to Cabot?

If so I'd wait to see what their response is (they may accept them as proof after all) and if you get no joy make a formal complaint, escalating to the FOS if you get nowhere with that.

You could also make a formal complaint to BoS over their refusal to supply written proof of the write off too I suppose.
