Office XP disc

My PC went T***s up a couple of months ago and have just paid £30 to get it wiped and it is now back to factory settings. We didn't have any Word, PowerPoint, Excel on when we bought it and a friend of ours put Office XP on it. I have an Office XP disc so if I put this on will it just put all the Office stuff on? I don't want to upset anything? I'm not very techie and have put the Open office stuff on but would prefer Word etc.

Thanks

Kate

If you've got the disc then there should be no problem installing (assuming you have the serial number to hand).

and a licence to use the software. Its the licence that makes it legal.

I have a set of office 2007 disks every version but no licence.
  • Thanks for the replies guys. I do have the licence number but the disk says disk 1. Do I need more than 1?

I think it may depend on the version of office XP you have. It's been too long for me to remember installing Office XP to be honest (must be about six years old now). You can try installing anyway. At worst, if you need a second disc, you just simply cancel the installation and no harm done.

Disk 2 usually contains publisher or clip art, if in doubt do a custom install and deselect publisher. it varies so much as office XP was a little bit of an odd ball no one really bothered with it it was out for such a short time before being replaced with office 2003.

and a licence number written on a disk doesn't mean you have a licence. you need the piece of paper that says software licence agreement.

Thinking out loud, that can't necessarily always be the case. Maybe not relevant here, but if you have downloaded version of office you wouldn't have a piece of paper so I'm not sure how important that is.

It is true. I know 2 companies who's IT department back in the days of windows 98 and 2000 and office 2000 who went through the packs and kept the pretty books and anything that had a certificate ohh and the cd's and chucked the rest in the bin. It was only when someone (official) checked their licensing out and they had chucked them all away. Everyone thought that the cds and certificates were all they needed to keep me included and this was when I actually looked in the packs what you got. They were given 30 days to sort it out. we actually let them sweat a little before handing over all the paper work that we had regarding the purchase of the licences and the guys checking accepted that they had bought licences and were legal but it was an experience and I learnt a lot regarding licencing due to that.
