Advice on electric heating in Scotland
Options
Hi
We are moving from England to a bungalow in central Scotland which has no gas connection. We want to replace the existing electric storage heaters but have no idea which would be the most cost-efficient. Does anyone have any experience with this and could advise, please?
Thanks, Trish

Scotland had/has a number of 'legacy' tariffs depending on area/company. These are variations on Economy7/Economy10. If you have one of these tariffs they may(note may) make storage heaters a more attractive option.
If you don't want storage heaters, then your options are the same as anyone else in UK - oil, LPG, heat pump, solid fuel or panel heaters.
The merits/demerits of each option are discussed frequently on this forum and elsewhere on the Web.0 -
A storage heater is the same wherever you go - they are the same efficiency.
Check the tariff - there are some specials as well as E10 and E7
Don't be tempted by the sales pitch for the magic heaters.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Thank you both for your replies.
We're not sure regarding electric storage heaters vs electric radiators but as you say Cardew, I'm sure I'll find more information on the web.
Thank you.0 -
It's very unlikely that you will find electric radiators cheaper to run than storage heaters.0

Without question panels heaterswill not be cheaper to run. Also bear in mind that electrical heaters are the subject of the very worst advertising in the media/flyers - it borders on the criminal.
You need to appreciate that the very cheapest electrical heater, say a £10 fan heater from Argos, is equally as efficient(100%) as ANY other electrical heater on the market. It doesn't matter if it is filled and coated with any substance known to man it has the same 100% efficiency and costs EXACTLY the same to run for the same heat output. If you read the various threads in this section you will find salesmen trying to charge up to £1,500 for a single heater.0 -

Thanks Cardew, we have found it difficult to find any unbiased information really but as I say, it's a new area for us and I'll check the rest of the forum. Thanks again for your help, Trish0 -

Not sure the OP said anything about solar panels?
However, I totally agree with your next paragraph.0
