Community Care Grants/Budgeting Loans...

Were signing into our very own Council property 1 st week in December. As we've both lived with parents we don't really have that much. I've been told that we can apply for a community Care Grand and/or a Budgeting loan.

Do these get assessed the same way as DLA/IB? Is it all about a points threshold system again?

  • It will all depend on what benefits you are recieving and how long. I think at the moment you have to have been in receipt of Income Suport or JSA for the previous 26 weeks. Budgeting loans are given if you have been in receipt of either of these benefits for 26 weeks and do not have a certain amount of savings. Budgeting Loans have to be repaid from the JSA or Income Support at an agree rate but are interest free.
Community Care Grants have the same criteria I think and as they are a Grant they do not have to be repaid. But I think the criteria is slightly different and requires more information.
I'm sure someone will be around soon with a bit more information. Good Luck with the move. I think you can also get a loan/grant for help with removal costs.

  • Yes, Morglin or Fran will be here with a full answer!
OH is on DLA lower and IB higher.

You may be able to get a Budgeting Loan if you or your partner or civil partner have been claiming or getting payment for one of the following benefits for at least 26 weeks:
    • Income Support
    • income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
    • Pension Credit

and you need help to pay for any of the following:
    • furniture or household equipment
    • clothing or footwear
    • advance rent or removal expenses for a new home
    • travelling expenses
    • things to help you look for or start work
    • improving, maintaining or securing your home
    • repaying hire purchase or other debts you took out to pay for any of the above

Budgeting loans is only for IS/JSA as far as I know.
Have you tried freecycle? when we got our house we managed to get most of the furniture that way.
Are you working or claiming yourself?

To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,
    requires brains!
