Using VDIs to work remote - specs required

Hi.

I need a new laptop as the current one is past is use by date.

The primary use will to be work remotely, accessing my company's VDI.

Am I right in saying that that, from the perspective of my laptop, a low grade machine will be ok as all the processing is done on the VDI?

For example, if I was running multiple applications directly on the laptop I'd need a good processor and plenty of RAM. However, if I'm only running one application (i.e. a web browser) then running multiple applications within the VDI, then the remote server is carrying out all the heavy lifting - is that right?

I don't want to fork out for a meaty machine when a basic one will do, but I'm not quite sure if my logic is sound here or not!

Yes, I've accessed a VDI running on a machine which itself connects through a VPN on an i3-4340 (a processor with integrated graphics which was mid range about 6 years ago) and performance was just fine.

VDI is similar to Citrix where most of the work is done on the servers

That's good to know.

I'm torn between going top of the range to future proof a little and going cheap/low spec to save cash now.

If there a minimum spec you'd recommend, even though the remote servers are doing the work? Will an i3 processor and 4GB of RAM be plenty for this?
