ETFs showing/not showing dividends in returns

I mostly use HL for fund data but am sometimes unsure whether returns include reinvested dividends. For example, comparing five year returns for two FTSE 100 ETFs:

Invesco Markets FTSE 100 UCITS ETF (S100) shows 4958.5 on 19/5/14 and 6381 on 16/5/19, an increase of 28.7%.

HSBC ETFs Plc FTSE 100 UCITS (HUKX) shows 6925 on 19/5/14 and 7398 on 16/5/19, an increase of 6.8%.

The FTSE has returned around 30% with dividends reinvested so I assume S100 shows dividends reinvested and HUKX shows them not reinvested. However both are presented as UCITS ETFs so how do I know, looking at a random fund, how returns are calculated? The only difference I can see is that on HL’s ‘at a glance’ page HUKX shows a divided yield of 4.23% while S100 shows n/a.

Look at the Key Investor Information Documents (KIIDs). The Invesco ETF reinvests dividends whereas the HSBC one doesnt.

Yes, I get that, but why do ETFs show the returns differently based on whether they distribute or reinvest income, compared to OEICs which show the same return - taking account of dividends - whether they are Income or Accumulation units?

HL show ETFs (and shares/ITs) as the share price which will or will not reflect distributions so you won't necessarily be comparing like for like. HL show funds differently and allow you to choose between price or total return and will show different returns, this is most apparent when looking at Inc funds. I don't use HL for this type of research into shares, ITs or ETFs. Trustnet, Morningstar etc are better for comparisons

I'm afraid I can't remember which poster on here told me this, but there's a hack you can do to see the total return (including dividend reinvestment) of ITs and ETFs on HL:

Pick an OEIC and go to its performance chart. Use the "Add to Chart" box below and to the right of the chart to add your chosen ETF or IT as a comparator. Then the return for both the fund and the ETF/IT will be shown without reinvestment (if you tick the "Price" box) or with reinvestment (if you tick the "Total Return" box).

For HUKX over the last 5 years, that gives me 6.78% (on a price basis) or 29.24% (on a total return basis).

Or you could just use Trustnet, Morningstar etc... :)

(The hack came from dividendhero in this thread.)
