You specifically asked in your own question if there was a way to get out of paying the money you owed, and there wasn't, so you did. You could have actually just paid them when they called you because it was the right thing to do, rather than later because you eventually discovered you were legally obliged to.0 -

Interesting thread forgetting morals if OP tells garage to whistle for it, what then can garage do?
The document is there in black and white. Price of new car minus trade in with balance FULLY paid.
I always think of Monopoly in these situations ‘bank error in your favour’
