Utilita - not sure?

So I had a rep from this company knock at my door last night wanting to read my meters. I said no as I have a smart meter and BG already know everything. He then barged in and wanted to look at the meter and explained his company can do exactly the same price but taking the standing charge away for the pre-payment meter im on. I was literally talked into it so quickly and thought I will just research it all today and cancel tonight. Their tariffs look cheaper than BG pre-payment tariffs but looking on the internet people don't seem to be happy with them.

Im a single mum with a small child and no family so could really do with some advice as im not used to dealing with this on my own. x

One not a meter reader more like a salesman .
Barged in you should report to the police.
  • I m a meter reader and we would possibly be sacked "barging in ".. We would need a warrant to "barge in " just like the police need one
Couple of points tho, British Gas do send meter readers out to check all meters, and that includes smart meters.Smart meters will get checked at approx 5 year intervals..
Door to door sales are banned and have been for a long time. I m suspicious that this chappie was even a salesman.
There are con merchants around who have the means to reset a prepayment meter using an illegal cloned "gist card " that is used by meter readers. That is straight fraud and needs reporting to the Police .
  • They sort of have a daily standing charge. It's a (hidden) higher charge for the first 2 kWh, then it goes to a cheaper rate after.
    This is for electricity.
Unit Rate 1* (pence per kWh) - 30.337p - This is their daily standing charge!
Unit Rate 2* (pence per kWh) -18.860p – This is charged for the reminder of the day.
If you do not use any electricity for that day, then you will not be charged anything. It resets every day.

Utilita do this a few times a year with me and don't take no for an answer in fact no matter what company name I give them for my "current" supplier they give the the usual "oh they were recently in trouble, we are better"
