How long can landlord take to decide on deposit deductions?

Our tenancy ended at the end of April and our landlord / the landlord’s agent is taking forever to get back to us about the deposit. They are claiming we have caused “water marks” on the tiling in the bathroom and that the proposed deduction from the deposit is “TBC” pending assessment by a specialist contractor who “will be attending in due course”.
Can the landlord take this long to come back to us regarding the deposit? It seems very unfair to leave us waiting so long. We will be disputing (and have told the landlord’s agent we will be disputing) the deduction because the bathroom was professionally cleaned on a weekly basis and any residual marks are, in our opinion, due to the marble not having been sealed/protected correctly when it was installed.
TDS seems to - very unhelpfully - say that the deadline is 10 days AFTER A FIGURE HAS BEEN AGREED. But what if the landlord, like ours, takes forever to actually tell you a figure? Why on earth is there no time deadline for them telling you their proposed deduction?
Would appreciate any advice.

Can't you just go onto TDS website and start a claim for your entire deposit.
Then it's up to the landlord to file the paperworkChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
