PCP and faulty car
Morning I’m after some advice, I brought a brand new Nissan x-trail in March 2017 and its on pcp. There is a problem with the sat nav radio system whereby it cuts out and reboots regularly, this can happen whilst your on the phone or following the sat nag so extremely annoying but as we tow a caravan potentially very danagerous! I’ve been in touch with Nissan and had this response;
At this stage I regret to advise you that Nissan are not able to confirm what is causing the units to cut out or reboot. However, we have assessed available data which suggests that vehicles experiencing this issue are geographically isolated, that replacing the affected unit does not resolve the issue, and that updating software on the units does not solve it either. Additionally, we have anecdotal evidence which suggests that the problem is not solely related to Nissan-manufactured vehicles, and we also have customers who have taken their vehicles abroad who have reported that their units work without fault on the continent. All of this indicates the problem is not related to the unit itself.
It seems likely that certain Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) signals being sent out are now working on a different frequency than before and these may be incompatible with current software – this would explain why it is happening in certain areas. As DAB signals are not sent out by Nissan, this is not something we have control over. As a result, we are working with other experts in this field, including the manufacturer of the units, to establish what is causing the concern and what we can do to rectify the situation for our customers. There is now great focus on reviewing the DAB data that is being transmitted and trying to confirm which signals are causing the systems to reset
themselves.
I’ve ssked if current models are affected and they’ve said replies as below;
However I can advise that we have not come across any new vehicles that this is impacting. While I understand that you may feel that therefore the problem is clearly with the system, we have numerous highly qualified technical specialists advising us otherwise. There is also evidence from many other customers and dealerships which clearly shows that having a new unit fitted does not resolve the problem.
I’ve been online and from looking at forums this issue has been ongoing since before I brought the car and Nissan were aware. I’m a bit miffed as to why I’m paying over £300 a month for a top of the range Nissan that doesn’t work properly - does anyone have any advice as to where I’d stand legally? Thanks for reading!

On something as trivial as a reboot of the radio/nav, you don't stand much of a chance at all, especially if it does turn out to be interference from a third party.
I'm not seeing how this is "dangerous" - perhaps you could clarify?0 -

I can only think it would be dangerous if the OP gets distracted by temporary losses of signal on satnav. (OP I love the satnag remark mine nags at me if go a different route to the one she wants me to go on, when I know a better route).
Satnav is a a tool, and a useful one, but as it is an accessory, I cannot see it as being something that would give the OP a route to reject the car.
I always have a mapbook in the car, and if I am doing a route I am unfamiliar with, I go through the road atlas to plan my route in advance. That way if satnav crashes, which most do at some point or other, I am not completely lost and I can look for the destination waypoints I had researched the day before on signposts.
Researching routes and alternative routes can be useful in the event of gridlock caused by an accident on a motorway. My wife missed a flight to meet me in the US last year because of a major accident on the M4. Satnav was completely useless because most of the alternatives were clogged and it kept trying to send her back to the affected part of the motorway.
An alternative is a phone holder and download the route on Google Maps or Waze or similar. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off your engine and set it up.
If losing satnav is considered to be a danger, then people's over reliance on accessories is a bigger danger.0 -

You are renting a top of the range Nissan and the sat nav doesn't work properly. I would try and get the dealer to fix it as it should still be under warranty. Have you been back to the supplying dealer yet?0 -

It's been back. The dealer escalated it to Nissan UK. Nissan have admitted there is an issue, but believe it to be due to localised interference from DAB...0 -
DAB works on entirely different frequencies than GPS. GPS works in the GHz range and it is impossible for DAB to interfere with it and vice versa even if you were sat on top of the transmitter. If they're saying that the Satnav not working is because of DAB broadcasts then they're spinning you a line.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. They're saying that DAB interference is causing the head unit to crash and reboot. Which is feasible.0

I'm surprised Nissan warranty the audio equipment longer than 12 months, it will be the Bosch unit, and these are well known for failures (most suspect heat related), the one in my Nissan doesn't detect GPS satellites any more, but at least the audio is still working (touch wood!!!)
As to what you can do, I don't know. Did you really only buy the car because of the audio unit? If you can convince everyone you did, then the car is clearly not fit for purpose, and Nissan should be refunding.
However, I suspect you will struggle here, and as they reckon that they can't fix it, you are stuck.
Quite a lot of people on the Nissan forums swap the Bosch unit out for one that works, even the eBay ones from China are supposed to be better, you could swap it back to the Bosch before your PCP ends if you are returning the car.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

What do you actually want out of this? A fix, compensation, out of the PCP deal, a new car?
You could ask them for compensation. If part of the car is unusable they should compensate you for not having it. I managed to get £1k out of them when the telematics on my Leaf were unreliable.0 -
I don't agree with the people who are saying "just put up with it". A major part of the car is not working. Is faulty. And therefore you should persist with Nissan and demand a fix for it.
If not I'd take it up with the dealer. You wouldn't accept a washing machine where the spin function broke after a year - so I don't see why you should accept a car where the infotainment system isn't working.
It is separate to your PCP finance deal. Your issue is with Nissan and/or the dealer. I would keep escalating till they provide you with a satisfactory fix or replacement.0 -
Have you considered, y'know, reading the entire post you're replying to?

Yes I have read the post, at no point does it say " I have been back to the dealer for a fix " or "they have had the vehicle for X weeks and cannot fix the fault and escalated to Nissan UK".
All I read is I have been in touch with Nissan and got this response and it is on PCP.0
