If it was, and had OP invested it globally back in 2009 it would likely be in the region of £300k now. Such is what happens when you are too worried about taking "risk". That £100k in today's money would be about £130k in today's money as well0 -

I didn't have £100k to invest or save back then0 -
Actually saving in accounts paying over 2% will be beating inflation (presently anyway).
Inflation is currently under this figure so whilst you may not be 'making any money' you certainly won't be loosing any to inflation either (which seems to fit with your goal of maintaining its value).
All that can change of course if inflation goes even slightly above the maximum savings rate available at the time.
That's how I understand it anyway
