I have just apllied to transfer some of my tax allowance to my husband and noticed it can be backdated.
I don't know if we were eligible in previous years. Do HMRC look into this for you and let you know ?

Thank you.
I'm assuming they won't just backdate any payments without checking first if we're entitled to them ?0 -
Yes they will.
There have been loads of posts on some of the Marriage Allowance threads.
You are eligible if you aren't classed as a higher rate payer.
But you can normally only benefit if you haven't used all your Personal Allowance.
So you need to check your position for each year before applying otherwise your spouse could end up with a refund whilst you get a tax bill to pay.
NB. I'm assuming you are actually talking about Marriage Allowance, not Married Couple's Allowance (Married Couple's Allowance is worth more money but one of you has to be born in the 1930's to qualify for that).0
