oil?
Options
looking at moving house. the property is in a lovely rural location which means no mains gas, but heating oil instead.
I have no experience of this, any advice therefore very welcome if possible please.
1) Is the cost of heating oil comparable to gas? Roughly how much am I looking at for Oil for a two bed bungalow?
2) hubby likes the idea of swapping the oil out for an electric boiler instead? which seems more environmentally friendly to me. has any done this? anything worth considering?
3) cooking. i love my electric oven with gas hob range. can a gas hob work off of bottled gas? or would you just stick with an electric hob? or electric Aga (i can dream)?
thanks in advance

Thanks. Not very helpful.
I've spoken with mortgage broker and current mortgage lender and credit cards not an issue as can evidence savings. The house is perfect for my exact requirements thanks.
I'm not put off by oil, just no experience of it. I don't see harm in asking others for their experience.
I was always taught that if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all......0 -
Just stick with oil for now.
You should get an induction electric hob. Better than gas.
The pans need to be magnetic though
I would think an electric aga would cost ££££ to run0 -

I'll try to be more helpful than some others have been.
I suggest that you first look here.
https://nottenergy.com/our-services/resources/energy-cost-comparison/
This will give you a comparison of the costs of the various fuels.
Yes, oil will be more expensive than mains gas, but how much more will depend on how much you pay per litre. Ask various local suppliers.
You will also see, and hear from others, that wet electric heating can be very expensive.
With regards to cooking, you can certainly buy an LPG cooker which behaves the same way as the mains gas that you are used to. A 47kg cylinder should last some months (depending on use) and will cost about £60-£80, depending on where you live.
Hope this helps.0 -
Probably the most expensive way to heat your house would be with an electric boiler - dont even contemplate it.
Oil is more expensive than mains gas but cheaper than LPG.
Andy's suggestion about getting an induction hob is an excellent idea. We've had gas hobs, electric ovens, halogen hobs, ceramic hobs and the best by far is our induction hob.
It's so much cleaner than gas, less condensation, stuff doesnt get burnt onto the hob or the pans. It's easily as responsive as gas and probably cheaper to run than LPG. You don't need super-duper pans, ours are Tesco's finest. Wed never go back to gas since having one.
Dunno where the nottenergy website referred above gets it's figures from but I'd do my own research if I were you to get a better idea of costs. I dont know anyone who pays over 20p/kwh for leccy (we are presently paying 11.5 but I reckon 13 - 15p/kwh is more likely)Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

In various houses I have experience of heating & cooking on all the main fuels i.e. mains gas, oil, LPG & electric.
The worst was cooking with oil & having to have the Aga heating the kitchen in the summer - eventually switched it off & used a couple portable induction hobs & microwave. Heating with oil was OK but it does whiff of paraffin.
We currently have the combination that I think is ideal - gas central heating, gas hob, gas fire in living room & an electric oven.
LPG in place of mains gas was a good albeit more expensive alternative to mains gas. The tank itself was buried in the ground for an extra €100 as part of the installation which was money well spent to remove an eyesore. This was in France although hopefully the same holds true for the UK.
Electric heating is fantastically more expensive than mains gas at about 5x the price per kWh & to be avoided at all costs if possible.0 -
I have oil, and an induction hob ( no mains gas)
For me, Oil was shockingly expensive after being on mains gas, you really don't realise how cheap mains gas is until you don't have it
However we have got used to the cost now and budget accordingly - and have gotten used to a cooler home ( but mine is a massive detached house )
The one thing about oil is you pay in advance, rather than arrears. The other thing is you are not tied to a supplier, you can change supplier every time you buy. I always check on cheapest oil before I buy for the cheapest price and then ring around. Some companies give a cheaper price for buying online for example, some charge more for a delivery with 24hrs, you do have to shop around
Bottled gas for a hob is perfectly doable and cheap, just you have to have a cage attached to the house. Induction works just as well as gas and is cleaner, it may be something you want to look at0 -
I would think it’s annoying enough to keep an eye on the oil level and ordering it.
Keeping an eye on the weight of the gas bottle maybe a step too far!
Induction elec!0
