Debt Collectors

I was in debt about £1300 and was pursued by a debt company, eventually they gave me 50% off my debt which i paid. 2-3 years after i had a letter through the door from a different debt collector and i worked out that the money they were after was the remaining amount of the previous debt. I still had the receipt and letter of previous debt payed which i sent to them via fax. Nothing from them again. 10 years down the line just recently had a letter from another debt company demanding the same payment. So what i can work out is that a debt company can offer you so much percentage off your debt but i think they can sell the rest on to a different debt collecting agency. So what i thought was my debt payed off end of, but was not. Has anyone else come across this? Or can debt companys say 50% off your debt and will be cleared, and then just pass the rest on to another debt company is this right???

It depends on the terms under which you paid them and whether it was agreed as a final settlement, and they wouldn't pursue you for the remainder.

However, as there has now presumably been more than a 6 year gap without acknowledgement of the debt (and there was no CCJ), then it would be statue barred.

It was agreed final settlement. but the rest was taken up by other debt companys 2-3 different companys over the years. And every time i give them the same imfomation then they leave me alone
  • Tell them you believe the debt to be a. settled and b. statute barred in any case

Only if the acknowledgement is within six years of the last time.
