Hello.
I have a question please about rights on deposits. I rented a flat which is on the second floor. I moved in last June and a couple of weeks after the floor was always seeping with water. These was reported to letting agent. It has been seeping ever since until four weeks ago. I’m vacating the property today and the lettings manager said that my washing machine has caused the leak and it has destroyed the flat underneath and used up my deposit to repair downstairs flat. My floor is not damaged though. I don’t have contents insurance. The letting manager said he will have his solicitor contact me in the event the expense exceed my deposit.
So, does he have the right to do that? Firstly, we informed him of the problem and he did nothing about it. And if our machine did the damage how come our floor is not damaged?
What can we do to get the deposit back?
Thank you in advance.

Dispute it with the deposit protection scheme.
You may owe money to the flat below. You don't owe money to the letting agent0
