Barclay Card help!

Hi Everyone,

Apologies if I’m not in the right place to ask about this, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction if not..!

After my father passed away, things changed at home - I took on his house (and therefore the mortgage). Unfortunately I can no longer ask him for financial advice, hence why I’m on here hoping someone can help.

I have an Experian credit rating of 999, owing only a mortgage and paying monthly payments on my car. My credit rating is something I’ve always been careful with - I’m going on holiday in a few weeks and thought that may be the kick up the **** I need to actually get a credit card to take with me, as I currently don’t have one (having been reminded that the lack of a credit card is the only negative point on my credit file).

I went onto the Martin Lewis website and did the eligibility checker, which said that Barclay card is a good bet for 0% on purchases, as I don’t need balance transfer. To my horror, after calling them tonight, they’ve declined my application! Can anyone give me any idea why?!

Thank you,

Confused and concerned 29 year old, Laura.

  • Only Barclaycard can tell you. And they’re not obliged to.

You credit score and rating mean nothing in the real world of lending as lenders do not see, care or use them.

Do you have any other credit facilities available to you? Mobile phone? Utilities etc?

Most likely reason is that you don't currently have a credit card so they have no idea of how you will manage the credit card account. Suggest you try with your own bank or apply for one of the bad credit/credit builder cards .

Did they offer you any other cards further down to the decline. It happens to me and I was declined but offered the same card I was applying for

The best place to start with your first card is your own bank. You have an established relationship and they have a more comprehensive view of your finances.

Hi Laura, Barclaycard Forward is almost 100% approval good for building credit file, the credit limit is really low to start with though. Did you apply for Platinum instead and got rejected?

Your 'credit score' is really just an indication. The reality is that each financial product is assessed differently.

Credit cards are probably being assessed on your history of borrowing and repaying short term finance. As you don't sound like you have any history of this, you may need a 'credit builder' type card for a while before you get a 0% card.

It shouldn't matter, though, as you don't seem like someone who needs a 0% card just yet! Just get a card with whatever interest rate and pay it off every month for a year or so.
