Uniform rebate - HMRC asking for bank account interest?

Hi, I've just discovered tax relief for uniform so I applied - basic £12 on £60 for 4 years.

I received a letter back saying they are unable to work my claim as ' you need to tell us your bank/building society interest for the tax year"

Is this normal? what does bank interest have to do with uniform relief?

any clarity on this would be appreciated, thanks

They clearly need it or they wouldn't be asking, if you have concerns than contact HMRC directly, but if you ignore it your not going to receive a rebate, so realistically making contact directly with the department is the best option.

At a guess it's so they can check any interest you have received from your bank account(s) are under the allowable amount.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

I submitted a final tax return for my deceased brother and a reply came back wanting to know about previous years interest.
  • As a basic rate payer any interest (ignoring ISA's) will need to be taxed although this may well be at either the savings starter rate of tax or savings nil rate of tax. Both of which are 0%.

IF interest is large enough some may be taxed at 20%, reducing any refund due.

HMRC do get this interest information from banks but the banks don't have to send it to HMRC until 30 June after the end of the tax year.

So they presumably haven't received it yet for the year to 5 April 2019 and cannot quantify any repayment for that year without the information. Hence the request to you.

Ultimately replying should mean you get your refund quicker than if you don't bother.
