Kindle 6” e-reader 2019, 10th edition

My old Kobo Glo is showing signs of not holding its charge.
I’ve seen the Kindle 6” e-reader but I’m put off having to connect it to an Amazon account and getting bombarded with “offers”. At £69.99 it’s clearly a give away price that will be paid for many times over. To opt out of the offers is another tenner.
Can I just use this to side load books from Calibre? (I do this with the Kobo) I assume if this is the case the other features like being able to look up things or possibly even the dictionary won’t work?
Or possibly without an active Amazon account it won’t work at all?

The only "offers" are on the start screen, not at any other time. Its only other books, not the awful ads you get whilst browsing on your PC. As soon as you swipe to start up your Kindle that's it. If you change your mind you can always ask Amazon later and they will just charge you the £10 to remove them.
Yes, Calibre works very well. I've always used it.
You will need an Amazon a/c to buy Kindle books, other formats can be reconfigured in Calibre too, and all the things on the Kindle will work whatever books you add to your Kindle.
I have the older Paperwhite and love it, although I'd like the new one that has Audible. The Paperwhite range is really superb because you can read in the dark or in bright sunshine.0 -
Brilliant. I can’t believe the Kindle 2019 is only £69.99 from John Lewis. It definitely has a back light, doesn’t it. I think the cheapest Kindle models before didn’t have one.0

Yes it has a light, they just added it to the basic Kindle this year.
You can just register it with Amazon then turn the wi-fi off and sideload away as usual, never connecting to the Amazon servers again. If you choose not to register it, the dictionary will still work (and its better than the dictionary on the Kobo) but you can't organise your books into collections (bookshelves on the Kobo). Book organisation on the Kobo is far better.
Also, bear in mind you can't read library books on a Kindle, and you'll need to use Calibre to convert all your current epubs to Kindle's azw format.0 -
The house kindles have read .mobi files quite happily & calibre converts epubs easily to that. I'm told the .azw format is mostly to make a downloaded book harder to rename & share.0

Are you sure that's true? I have the older Paperwhite and always have WiFi turned off, doesn't stop me creating collections and moving books to it.
For the OP, I paid the £10 to have Ad's removed and it was a total waste of money. If you buy one of the covers with a magnet in the edge, it wakes the Kindle up at the last page open so the only time you'd see adverts is when you go to the home page to select a new book.0 -
You can also get free ebooks and magazines from local library as well.0
