Virgin Money

Hi,

I thought I would share my experience of trying to open a Virgin Money Regular Saver account, paying 3% at the moment.

This account can only be opened at a Virgin Money Branch. I popped in to the Sheffield Fargate store

on Sunday 12th May.

I spoke to the receptionist and he informed me that I would have to make an appointment to see an advisor. He searched for an appointment and the earliest available appointment was the 27th June.

I did question this and he said he couldn't offer anything earlier as "We are very busy".

I really cannot understand the rationale for the appointment requirement, unless it is to sell other financial products.

I could understand it if was was applying for a mortgage or loan, but to deposit money, no.

Is this a common problem with Virgin Money?

Kevin

Opened one on Friday, was able to walk in and I didn’t click that had they been busy, that I would have had to come back on another day, so I guess I was lucky!

No upselling, straightforward, ID check, took about 20-30 minutes in total and a total waste of their and my time. It’s a passbook account but if that prevents fewerr people from opening and keeps their rates higher then it’s worth it. I share your frustration though.

For a branch based account, an appointment is always necessary.

You might be lucky and get one on a "walk in" basis or you might have to wait for the next available time.

The current branch saver is issue 16 which matures on May 1 2020.

Their pattern has been to bring out a new issue every couple of months - on that basis, issue 17 would come out in early June and would be the one you'd be opening.

On my first regular saver, Vigin Money gave to me, a phone call to make an appointment.

On my second regular saver, Virgin Money gave to me, an appointment after I had called them.

On my third regular saver, Virgin Money gave to me, an appointment straight after walking in.

Looking forward to the next one :D

    This is not investment advice.
Your money may go "down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... I got all tricked up and came up to this thing, lookin' so fire hot, a twenty out of ten..."

I find it really puzzling why they removed the option to open these online.
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)

The answer is in the replies above.

Hint : They don't want everyone opening these accounts, they are rare for a reason. You might like getting lots of interest but banks don't like paying it.

Opened Issue 16 last week. Not busy now but they have been.... mopping up Leeds bs Regular saver customers.
Apparently the staff are worried about redundancies following Clydesdale/Yorkshire buy out. There is a Yorkshire Bank right next door.
