Capital One card abroad?

Not that I am planning on using the card when abroad next week but I have it as an emergency in case my bank card is refused ( has happened ) but do I need to let C1 know I am going abroad, if so how? I can see nothing on their website. I have let my bank know that I will be abroad and that they should expect a payment request from the hotel but it would still not surprise me if they declined the payment!

Always best to let them know if possible.

We were away in the USA a couple of weeks ago where my wife's card got declined. Around 5 minutes later the general fraud check text comes through to confirm recent transactions.

We forgot to let them know... All our other foreign-spend cards worked no problem though!

Cards do randomly get declined abroad, but if you have multiple cards it's not an issue.

Instead of using your C1 card as backup or even your regular bank card if it has fees for overseas use, with their costs and uncertainty, why not open accounts that have no fees or exchange rate markup such as Starling Bank which are regularly used for travel and have no need at all to be notified.

Others include Monzo, Loot.io, Revolut, Metro Bank (Europe only). Some have geographic control through their app that knows when you and your phone and your card use are in the same place (or not, preventing fraud).

These cost nothing and are likely to save you money when traveling. There are also the various 'travel' credit cards of course, if future trips are also likely.
