Gift card for ticketmaster has expired

I was given a Ticket master gift card quite a few Christmases ago. I neglected to use it, but remembered it today when I went to buy some tickets. After typing in the number, I was told it was expired, and that all Ticket master cards expired after 12 months, and it was impossible to get a refund.
Surely this is violating some consumer law? It's so arbitrary. They've taken our money for the card, so surely they should honour it.
Is there anything I can do to recoup the money?

Did you purchase the gift card yourselves? If so, what were the terms and conditions when you purchased?
If they didn't state 12 months at the time then they can't retrospectively add that term and it would fall to the statutory limitation period. If they did state it then you may be out of luck - but perhaps still worth contacting them and saying you weren't aware and asking if they can make an exception as a goodwill gesture. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
You are not the purchaser in the first place so rights are with them .
As the fact of 12 months expiry is well posted on Ticketmasters site they have done nothing wrong and are violating no consumer laws ..

How long is my Gift Card valid for? Your card is valid for 12 months from the day it was bought – after that, it will expire and we can't extend cards or issue refunds. If you're the one giving the gift, please remember to pass the information on – you don't want it to go to waste!>>0 -

Aside from trying to negotiate an unprecedented gesture of goodwill from Ticketmaster, there is absolutely nothing you can do, sorry.(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)0 -
All you can do is use it as a life lesson - keep a note of expiry dates etc0

Nearly all companies do this and it annoys the hell out of me. Amazon are one of the great exceptions (10 years!)
Due to this, if anyone gives me a gift card then I immediately sell it on ebay (unless I'm certain I'll use it). You can usually get 80-90% of the value back in cash if it's for a big retailer.0
