Tax code too high?

my tax code is 1390L and always has been for the last 3 years (since i changed jobs)
I am sure it should be 1250L,
is there some grey area where somwehow i have increased my tax code for work related expenses but i have NEVER been asked for receipts.
I am worried one day they might ask for lots of money back
(they have done this before TWICE,once when I received too much child tax credit and once when my old employer failed to change my tax code so ended up oweing alot).
I am still paying 1,000s back in child tax credits and becuase of the incorrect tax code.
i DONT want to ring them because i used to be a contractor many years ago and had a bad experience with them asking too many questions that caught me out always owing them more money somehow.

This question might be better asked in a tax forum rather than a benefits forum.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0

Having the same "L" tax code for 3 years would be very unusual (though not impossible).
You can check your Personal Tax Account on gov.uk to see how the 1350L code has been calculated.0
