£20k Car @ 21

Isn't an Ateca a family SUV though? Do you have kids already?
Why does this car float your boat? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
Look at the numbers...
An Ateca FR is £27k list, not £20k.
£8k down and £250/mo x 48 = £20k paid off.
Sorry, I should have mentioned I was looking at getting a second hand Ateca FR, and a lot are going for £20k~ with not much millage.
I wouldn't buy a new car, because I'm not wealthy enough to justify losing thousands when driving it away from the showroom lol.0 -
I think what people are trying to get across is could you afford this, Yes. Does it make good financial sense? No.
If this is your dream car and it looks like you can afford it, why not, go for it.
But I think people replying to you post, myself included, can't really see how this is going to change your life for the better to the amount you are going to paying out. But then, I've never spent 20k on a car in my life so maybe its just different priorities.0 -
At age 21, you are in a very good spot with £5k tucked away in savings and (as of December) an outright owner of a 4 year old car.
I really can't fathom why on earth you would want to blow all that and then get yourself into 4 years of £250pm debt over a pretty uninteresting SUV you will get bored of. I'd keep the Fiesta going and try and use the extra £200pm you will have in your pocket to address the £1269pm rent burden you have got by trying to raise funds for a mortgage deposit.
Plenty of time in life for a bloody Seat Alteca if thats your dream.
The £1269pm is every cost I have going out monthly, with a few hundred kept for things that go wrong like appliances breaking or car work etc...
So it's £1000 I have per month to save and put some into a car.
A lot of people don't like my choice of car either :rotfl: But I've looked into it and it seems like a really nice car to drive, and I like the looks of it. The MPG on it seems reasonable too. I grew up with 4X4s and SUVs, and have always dreamed of having one since I was younger, so personally to me I'd be very happy in one, as I've test driven a few and know what I like.
I like the idea of having a faster car, but I also love bigger cars a lot. So, I just thought why not combine the two....
The thing I've found recently is if you suggest a car to someone, they always say "But you could get this car for that price!!"
Yes, the car that in your eyes you would want if you were spending the money. I'm open to criticism and help on getting a car that is actually worth it, but don't want someone's bias getting in the way as if it were their own decision they were making init.
Also looking into the future is always sensible, even if it's for things you might not necessarily care about right now, like a pension, however I am not in a need nor rush to get on the property ladder right now or within the next 5 or so years.
We all have our own priorities we would prioritise, all of our circumstances are different too. I agree having your own home is liberating and sensible, but I can put money away still and do that when it matters to me... What matters for me at my younger age is having something I enjoy and something I can afford.0 -

Yes, somebody else has taken the first £7k of the depreciation. But there's still a hell of a lot to go. A 4.5yo VW Tiguan is now about £8-9k.
And getting a cheap finance rate on a used car is nowhere near as easy as on a new one - because the manufacturers subsidise the finance, to shift metal.
Oh, and where do you think all these low-mileage 6-12mo cars come from? They're nearly all ex-rentals.
(BTW, you know that an Ateca FR is FWD all of the time it's on road, right, not 4x4?)0 -
However, why can't I just get a nice car while also saving for a house at the same time? :rotfl:
If you can afford £300 per month on a car and still save £500 per month, as well as paying rent, food, clothes, socialising, etc etc., then I'm not really sure why you've started this thread.
If you want it and can afford it, get it.0 -

The FR has 187bhp and weighs 2.1 tons 187/2.1 =89 bhp/ton
A 2015 Ford Fiesta 1.2 has 82bhp and weighs 1.1 tons 82/1.1 = 74 bhp/ton.
This is really not going to feel much quicker than your Fiesta.
Edited to add - not only that, the ateca has the aero dynamic profile of a house. At any sort of A road speed its shape will negate any power advantage.Im A Budding Neil Woodford.0 -

Hopefully one day you will buy a new car (if you want) you don't lose thousands as you drive from the showroom, as you wouldn't collect it and put it straight up for sale, as an earlier post reminds you, whilst it depreciates, you are getting use out of it.
It's great having money saved but only if it is going to be spent at some point.0 -
I didnt know what an Ateca was, so i did some googling.

I would test drive it before I buy of course, so who knows, that might be a game changer and stop me getting it.
I could always stage 1 remap the car to get it up to 230 BHP and increase the torque to 450  Do you have any recommendations of a nippy SUV/ 4X4?0 -
