washing trainers

Does anyone put trainers in the washing machine? I am scared to do this as my machine was expensive (to me).

I tried washing in a bowl but it didn't work, they still smell :( son fell into a dyke wearing them.

Are you allowed to put trainers in the machines at the launderette (I am guessing not).

How do you wash trainers?

Thanks

Are they trainers designed for and used for sporting activities, or trainers for fashion and general wear? Wierd question but what do they smell of?

It is not recommended to put proper sports shoes through the washing machine because it damages the structure/ cushioning. A good soaking makes some sports shoes smell wierd (eg. cat wee!) which is apparently due to the glue.

I haven't washed trainers but I did wash my slippers last week. I put them in the mesh bag I use for bras so that they didn't get tangled up with the other washing. Washed up fine, no problems.:)

I have often washed my trainers in the machine and had no problems I wear Sketchers or Adidas and they are fine I wait unil I have a nice sunny day with a bit of a gentle breeze and peg up by the inner tongues until dry and park them in the airing cupboard for a day or so to ensure they are dry I have a programme on my machine that says sports weara little shoe with some rays round it I have an indesit and its programme 11 and 12 one for shoes and one for tops or shorts etc I do't do sports as I am a little old lady who just need comfy shoes to walk with :) but I have also done my DGS sports stuff with no problems I put the laces in a small mesh bag or tie them into an old pop sock just to keep them together

Yes, I wash mine and my husbands trainers in the washing machine. I pop them in a pillowcase and tie the top. I always have other items in the machine to "cushion" them and at a warm wash.

Thanks all they are just fashion trainers.

They smell of dirty stale dyke water, it has gotten better since I washed them in the bowl but its still there.

I will think about putting them in the machine.

I have tried washing trainers and it works but sometimes the inner soles start to come a bit lose. I think some of the glue isn't water resistant so it's not something I would want to do regularly.

I've done two pairs this week. First they get 20 mins in a bucket of hot water with a scoop of vanish which gets rid of any stains and helps get the white foam back to white, then a normal 40c wash. They have come out box fresh. Not bad for three year old trainers.

I like this idea its similar to what I did only I didn't put in the machine afterwards I think they need that. My machine has a 15min cycle so I might do the bowl again and use that cycle with some old towels in as well.
  • For mud I scrub my run trainers in a bucket.

For smell I Chuck in a lot of bicarbonate of soda, leave at least overnight, then vacuum/ shake out.

If they're really bad they might need a couple of goes at it.

Threw my sweaty grubby white canvas trainers in once... Came out looking like new. And smelled nice

Soak them in vanish, rub in with old toothbrush, then put in a washing bag to stop them flying around the drum, add more vanish to the drum, then put on a cool wash. Hot wash will soften any glue holding your trainers together so dont do that. Also add an old towel to the wash, to minimise any banging. And remove the inside soles if they're not stuck down as these tend to get obliterated. Hand wash the soles

Don't see why it would be any different for other types of trainers.
