Sign written vehicle on new build site

We are buying a new build property with Abbey Homes and have been told that for my partner to have his sign written work van on site he has to pay roughly £100 per year. The property we are buying has a double driveway and garage. One of his colleagues also had this issue on another local new build development but he did not have a private driveway so it was parked on the road. Why is this and do we still have to pay if we park it in the garage overnight?

Wouldn't it make more sense to ask Abbey Homes?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

You would need to see the exact wording of the covenant. Some will restrict the parking of ‘commercial vehicles’ on the estate roads, some also include areas visible from public parts of the estate, which may include drive ways. I would’ve thought a garage would be fine, but you’ll be lucky if a van will for into a new build garage.

The developers only tend to care about these covenants whilst they’re on site and trying to sell properties.

I am actually surprised that they are allowing vans with signs - even for £100 a year. They are often (usually) banned on new build estates for aesthetic - and selling - reasons

As da_rule says I'd have thought a garage would be fine if it fits. And while I agree that developers aren't bothered with covenants after they have left you can find that residents can be still interested in having them enforced.

I guess enforcing the covenant after they are all sold could be worth it if they found a new money spinner, Usually they don't care after they move on.

If the prohibition is on sign written vans, get some cheap magnetic vinyl and cover the signs with it.

Or hide it under a manky tarpaulin.

Or borrow some scrap cars from the scrapyard, and refuse to move them off the drive (and lawn) until Abbey give free permission in perpetuity.

as much as I hate seeing loads of work vans near where I live I'd much rather them than some bloody old caravans that haven't moved in 20 years

I would park it in the garage and not tell or pay Abbey anything. It's much safer in the garage especially if he has tools in it.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Yes, but then we wouldn't have the benefit of seeing the question, reading the answers from other (more helpful) people and knowing that this is AH's policy. Think before you post, eh?
