am changing phone. Want to use as sat nav. How long would 1GB last if constantly turned on. (Would it be a different timescale if I was downloading eg a film ?)

sat nav uses very little data. waze i find uses a bit more than google maps. i find after an 8 hour stint it may have used around 15mb so 1 gb is loads.

also with google maps you can download the map on wifi and it will use zero data whilst navigating (you will not of course, receive the live traffic updates and road closures in this mode though, which i find really neccessary).

Should last a while providing its only used for sat nav.. Make sure you have automatic updates only turned on to download over wifi (settings for this are found in the google store, unsure about apple products) and don't use youtube.. Downloading movies will suck it dry fast so I wouldn't do that if I were you.

To save a bit of data, you could set your sat nav up before you go out while ur in your home while still connected to wifi, then as you go out of range as you drive away, it will automatically drop onto your mobile data. It wouldnt save much, but if you use it daily, then the savings will add up over time.

Also, if your with BT or sky broadband, you have access to free wifi hotspots which would also save your data, but i found these spotty and they disconnect often

For street mapping while walking around a strange town, I use the free app “Maps.me”. The maps are free too.

It is great for marking where you parked, your bus stop, hotel, etc. It has basic sat nav but it’s no TomTom. The maps are free and in some cases very detailed (villa/pool outlines and individual trees in parts of Spain) the app can run completely off line and the maps only download the specific area you want, for example SE England is only 51MB, Yorkshire and the Humber, 78MB.

I use Google Maps in my truck and have it running sometimes 10hrs a day covering 400 miles or more. 1GB would see you most of the month doing that 5 days a week.
