So this seems to be an odd one and I'm hoping that someone can offer advice.
I've kept no paperwork relating to an loan I took out in the late 1990's to purchase a car , and the only evidence i have that the loan existed in an old bank statement. RBS have informed me that they have not kept ANY paperwork relating to said loan..and therefore can't find me. They do accept my bank statement that does confirm I had a loan with them, but as I've no paperwork either, they've basically said its a lost cause and the only way they will pursue is If I provide documentation that shows i had PPI.
So my question is.... Do I just leave it here as I can't proceed ?
From a personal point of view... I can't remember if I had PPI or not and i just wanted to find out IF I did or not before proceeding.
Any pointers would be great.

Which is understandable given how long ago it was. Even more so if you are now not a customer of theirs.Do I just leave it here as I can't proceed ?
If neither you or they have any evidence of PPI being paid, then its game over.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Even you could remember*, with zero documentation from them or you, it ends .
Otherwise all of a sudden everyone would suddenly remember they had PPI.
And remember it was unfairly sold.
And remember the PPI was £500/ week.
*and we all know how accurate people's memories of financial transactions from 20+ years ago are likely to be0
