Looking to book flights for a holiday ~£1000. Currently don't have a credit card, was looking to get a credit card anyway - someone has recommended the British Airways American Express® Credit Card - which I can see has no annual fee .

I rarely make large purchases, am able to pay off in full. i'd like to build credit score but how do I set a direct debit up to automatically pay it off in full?

Am I likely to be accepted? My score is 834/999 on the credit club

Forget about your 'score', its about what your credit file will say RE your personal finances. Do you have any outstanding loans/debt etc etc, these are the things that will play into how likely it is that your accepted for the card

As for setting up a direct debit to pay it off in full, thats something thats easily done once you have the card (if you get it), you can either set up a direct debit from the credit card's account, or a standing order from your current account

    Thanks, - I don't have any outstanding loan/debt.

Will paying direct debits on time play into this?

A Direct Debit (DD) is the simplest way to make sure your payment arrives before the due date. With the DD guarantee, nothing can really go wrong. Just make sure you have enough money in your current account to cover the DD and everything will be sweet.

A word of warning though. The initial DD payment may take time to be set up. Whether the DD is set up in time will be made clear in your first statement. If the DD is not ready, then you will have to make a manual payment via Faster Payment or debit card for the first payment, at least a couple of days before the due date. :)

Paying your direct debits on-time for your lines of credit does help yes.

For most people who haven't ever taken any loans/finance of any sort, the first thing this will be is your a phone contract

Personally, i'd say just apply for the card and see what happens.. everyone has to start somewhere

As you don't have a credit card already you may not be accepted for this rewards card. Good luck but don't be surprised if you are declined. You don't need to build a credit score you need to build a credit history. The score that you have quoted is meaningless as no credit card issuer that you apply to will see it.
Setting up a direct debit is easy. When you are accepted for a card contact the issuer who will assist you.

I don't have a phone contract at the moment- only contract I have will be broadband. I shall apply anyway.

If I fail to get this card will this affect an application for another card ?

Does your broadband provider appear on any of your credit reports?

Check noddle, clearscore & money saving expert credit club as these give you free access to the three credit reference agencies.

If your broadband provider doesn't report to them then it won't be helping building a good credit history.

If you want the Amex, feel free to use this referral link (you'll get a bigger welcome bonus): http://amex.co.uk/refer/lewisl5gRM?CPID=999999554

It's for the Gold card, but you can also scroll down and pick the BA Amex if you wish, and still benefit from the bigger bonus
