    It's good that the builder is coming to you through personal recommendation. I misunderstood, I thought you were just going in "blind" as it were.

    It's still a good idea to meet a couple more though. Not just for pricing but also to gather information and pick their brains for ideas and designs etc.

    I've recently had work done which included many of the things on your list, plus a few other bits. I had a builder I knew well co-ordinate everything for me, but we were still in touch multiple times most days as things cropped up or decisions needed to be made, and I did site visits every two weeks, which were extremely useful for everyone (we ended up completely changing our minds on at least two things that I can think of, based on discussions we were only really able to have while standing around and looking at the stuff).

    Obviously it could have been done without my involvement, but it was definitely to my benefit that I was able to be available and present as needed. If you decide to go away, maybe consider going somewhere local-ish, where you can drive back for the day if necessary?
