It seems unacceptable to me that tui could cancel our flight when we booked so far in advance it’s poor customer service and I think I deserve an explanation

To manage your expectations you're not going to get anything from TUI - least of all an explanation.

There are a plethora of FB groups, posts on here, slots on consumer based TV programmes and no change to their behaviour. Either suck it up and vote with your feet in future or, if there's a financial loss worth claiming for then join the queue of people taking action via MCOL

I should add that I have the flight numbers for the revised flights ...I checked on Bott & co flight checker and they both departed as I stated on 16/4 I have no problem with tui cancelling my flight it was my choice to then accept another flight but I do have a problem with them cancelling my flight when that flight still existed

Does the website you checked show that the flight you originally booked - not the one with a different flight number - departed from Manchester on the day of your original departure i.e. 16/4?
If it doesn't, how can you say it was the flight you booked and still existed and departed on your original date of 16/4?

Thanks to everyone for your help and sorry it was such a long ramble Re the points raised : Re the long ramble about families We could not change the hotel because my brother and daughter had booked there so we were tied to it. I’m pretty certain there were not two flights to Manchester at that time on those dates I would have noticed plus the return flight was exactly the same time. It seems unacceptable to me that tui could cancel our flight when we booked so far in advance it’s poor customer service and I think I deserve an explanation

Regardless of your reasons for booking the holiday on the date you did, it's irrelevant to your (possible) complaint.
You need to be 100% certain that TUI lied to you about your flight being cancelled.
Maybe you couldn't see the other flight when you booked because it was fully booked at the time you booked your holiday.

What did you say in your complaint to TUI?
Did it contain pretty much the same detail as your original post on here?

Do TUI have Max 8s? Your flight may have been cancelled due to the plane not being available and they subsequently replaced with an alternative flight on a lower capacity plane.

You might be miffed (and I would be too in the circumstances) but their reason or the outcome of other people is irrelevant. The time to raise your concerns and negotiate for compensation was when they notified you of the cancellation, not after the holiday has been and gone.

They have 6 Max 8's. They are currently leasing aircraft from Titan to make up the shortfall.

It's entirely feasible the flight has been affected due to these issues.
