Barclaycard credit increase - how do I maximise it

I have a new Barclaycard, just over 6 months old with a credit limit of £1200. It's too small for me.

Now I'm just starting to use it, having only made a few small transactions up until the last month. In the last month I have started using it and the limit is so small, that to keep it active i have had to pay money into the balance to make sure I have available funds to use it.

When my May statement is issued I will immediately pay down the balance and so on until I get a higher limit.

What's the best tactic and timing to ensure that I get the maximum credit limit asap ?

  • It's down to Barclaycard how much they want to give you.

If you login to the App or Website you can apply for a credit limit increase there.

You can specify an amount you want and it will either accept it or tell you the lower amount they're willing to give you.

If you accept, then you cannot ask for another increase until after 4 months

Also don't put the card into credit as this is against the T's and C's and they could close the account.

Make sure whatever you spend as well you clear in full after each statement

In your experience what's the best timing?

I called customer service and they said wait a couple of statement ( actually 2-3 ) to increase my chances of the maximum. So that would be either 13 Jun or Jul. But I wanted to see what others experienced, in case there is a better way. ( I will be paying off the balance as you say - and will be careful not to put the balance into credit )
  • There is no "maximum" or "better way".
    It's entirely different person-to-person.

Have you looked on the app or website yet to see if you're eligible for a limit increase?

Yes, it indicates that i can apply for an increase. As i mentioned the Barclaycard operator recommended holding off a couple of statements to apply in order to get the max. Was hoping to get some perspectives on that and what criteria there is on this generally.

Would you paying the balance off fully and waiting the active 2-3 months?
  • What is "the max"?

It sounds like they were just reading from their script.

If you want the increase now then apply for it now
  • "the max" as far as I understand it for any UK credit card is £25K limit, I know this is probably not what the OP is asking but there you go, personally I wouldn't ask for an increase it smacks of desperation unless I'm completely wrong with my theory, I have never asked for an increase and have a lot of pretty big limits now. I think the key is time passed and patience to getting increases, course as Gary has said it is different for everyone and I fully agree with that statement.

I've had a few cards where I've never been offered an automatic increase, but as soon as I request an increase it's been given. With some I diarise to request an increase every 6 months and more often than not its granted, as long as I don't ask for a ridiculous amount. I've got limits of between £12-21k with various cards by doing that.
