Over the past few months I have noticed when using certain websites, blogs, emails that they are telling me I am not safe as they are not encrypted. Some are sites I have used for many years. According to what I have read - it is up to the owners of the sites to encrypt them.

Please could someone explain this . Many Thanks.

These websites do not have an 'SSL' (secure sockets layer). This encrypts the data between you and the server so that nobody in the middle can see it in plain text.

It used to be the case that quite a lot of websites only used an SSL on sites where where you entered card details, passwords, or other personal information - but this has been changing recently (and for the good) due to pushes such as internet browsers warning people that the website is not encrypted. Now, many people are making their website secure even if you do not enter any data onto it.

You will see at the top of this forum that there is a padlock and the website URL says 'HTTPS', this means that it is encrypted.

I wouldn't freak out if a website doesn't have an SSL, but I just wouldnt enter in any personal information into it.

^^ Good explanation there which pretty much covers it ..

Long and short is that if you are not sending anything that is private then you really dont need to be worried if the site is secure or not ..
