I want to start paying my mothers energy bill for her from my account since she has trouble dealing with money matters lately.

If I request a name change on the bill would this count as breaking the contract and result in the £35 per fuel fee?

She is with Eon.

TIA

Don't think you can change the name of the account holder without closing the account , but you should be able to take over paying the account -most .if not all,of the Utility Cos. will allow the bill to be paid by another person. I've certainly done it in the past for a relation.

Just pay it online from your own bank account - Eon won't care from where the money comes from.

Metrobus - is this just the tip of the iceberg ? Look at insurances (buildings/contents will auto renew at alarming prices), council tax,

    Have you POA?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Hello metrobus and I'm sorry your mother is having difficulties. It's good you're able to help.

Brewerdave is right, to change the name to yours, we'll need to close your mother's account and open a new one for you. Exit fees don't apply in these cases.

As both brewerdave and Robin9 say, we'll be happy to accept payments from you. These can be made by debit or credit card over the phone by talking to an advisor or via the automated system. They can also be made through our website. We'll accept cheque payments from your account too. If you prefer, a Direct Debit can be set up based on your bank details.

There are other ways we can help. Is your mother able to give you authority to handle her account? A Letter of Authority can be downloaded from our website to set this up. Once done, you'll be able to look after her account including making payments on her behalf.

If applicable, make sure your mother is on our Priority Services Register. This lets us provide free support and advice for customers of pensionable age or with disabilities.

Do you know if she qualifies for Warm Home Discount (worth £140 last time)? If she does, there's an application form on our website. Also on our website, is more information about the above as well as some other ways we might be able to help.

Hope this points you in the right direction metrobus. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

Glad the Letter of Authority looks useful metrobus. Once received, it'll be logged on your mother's account so all advisors can see.
