Moved out of rented need advice about deposit

Evening all
So we moved out of our rented house on Saturday. We were out of contract as it ran out last Nov and we never signed another one.
We have 2300 in deposit.
When we moved in the living room, dining room and master bedroom carpets were in very bad condition, ripped and stains. We asked for them to replace but landlord refused. We ended up replacing ourselves.
We added fitted blinds and a side gate for security as anyone could walk into the garden and we have children.
Today the letting agents inspected house. Said how the carpets we replaced needed cleaning and that one of the blinds we had put up was broken (its not) they've been very picky about alot of things which I have said I would go in and clean or fix. Letting agents have said the landlord has to give permission for us to enter the property and can decide whether to charge us for the things they've flagged up.
One of them being a chip in the bath which was already there when we moved in. I've spoken to previous tenant and she said she will back me up as it was there when she moved in!
Can they just refuse us to rectify any things they've flagged up and just take our deposit??
Stressed out tonight we really need our money!!
Thank you for reading

Just put a claim in for the whole lot from the deposit scheme.
They cannot ask for betterment, so as long as the carpets are equivalent to when you moved in that’s fine. Do you have move in photos? Do the agents?
It’s all about what’s recorded at the beginning on the inventory. If you don’t have one then the agents are going to struggle to claim anything from you.
The landlord does not get to decide to charge you. They get to request payment which you can agree or disagree with. If you disagree you go to arbitration.
When I have used this service in the past I found them very fair so don’t worry.0 -
Thank you so much for your reply, it was so helpful!
I didn't realise the landlord couldn't take the deposit! It says in the inventory the carpets have multiple stains and a rip.
The new carpet is so much nicer.
Also they are saying one of the drawers in the kitchen has water damage. This happened due to a leak in the sink taps next to the drawer... we reported the leak and they took two long to come and fit it that the drawer and work top were damaged... now it's our fault!
They are so going to try to get as much money from us I'm sure of it!0 -

look, instead of listing every thing they have claimed, all you need to focus on is this:Anxiousannie wrote: »Thank you so much for your reply, it was so helpful!

1. your deposit is in a protection scheme.
2. you claim for return of the deposit through your scheme
3. if the LL claims for costs you do not accept, you get the scheme to arbitrate on your behalf. That is why the scheme exists. they do nothing fore LL, they were brought in to help tenants, but sadly tenants do nothing to learn what it means to be a tenant and what support they have
4. schemes deal with hundreds of disputes. They know full well what is and is not allowable provided you have the evidence to support what you say0
