Sky and Humax from same dish possible?

From a tech ignoramus, could you please help. We have cancelled sky and looking at other options. We have two rooms where we want different things. I am happy to watch BBC and ITV mainly, but want to record and pause.

I have already been advised on here that the Humax record box is best for me, as we have terrible broadband speeds, and our local transmitter is very limited. So I could get a Humax box at £179.

However, OH still wants Sky at £13 per month.

We have only 1 dish, will it support both the humax box and sky? I think we would need extra cables added for humax possibly.

Can I use Humax box without a smart tv?

Thanks

If you want to record from both then the best is to get a quad LNB, as for the smart TV question all you need is a connection from the TV and Humax which is compatible e.g. HDMI usually , tell us which TV will help.
Edited: forgot to mention that catchup TV needs a fair broadband though

You're correct, you'll need extra cables. If you're lucky when the Sky dish was installed it came with a quad LNB on the end of the arm which will have four outputs on it, two currently used by Sky, so all it is a case of doing is running another two cables from the remaining outputs to where the Humax box will be.

Yes, it just needs to have a HDMI port spare to plug the cable from the Humax box to the TV.

Which Sky system do you use? If Sky+ then a simple quad LNB will work, two leads to each box. However if SkyQ then the normal SkyQ LNB is not compatable with a Humax dish.
I have heard there are special LNBs with a mix of outlets for this but you will need to check carefully.
We have Sky+ and a Humax box on one quad LNB and it works well.

Hi My postcode is IP17 2PH very rural, they were going to put a street cabinet in with fibre this Spring, but now say too expensive.

Our latest thoughts are - we have Sky just for OH at £13 per month Entertainment... and we buy a Humax box with record option, possibly a refurb, for me. I would rather pay a one off than pay extra £13 per month for multi room. I mainly watch BBC/ITV but want record and pause option. I rang Humax and they said ok to use dish for both, as long as we have enough cables. Apparently we have 5.

My very old TV does not have HDMI but I can either get a new cheapish one, or possibly a family member may have a spare to give us. This sounds the best option I think, and thanks very much for all your help and suggestions.

I thought it was worth quoting your post from the other thread with this one.

Are you sure you have 5 cables coming from the Sky dish? It's usually an even number.

Have Sky offered you the basic Entertainment package for just £13?

This is a Quad LNB, that fits your dish:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sky-LNB-Output-Quad-Freesat/dp/B00KS4M786/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2P7M9ITVMPN0Z&keywords=quad+lnb+for+sky+dish&qid=1557257349&s=gateway&sprefix=QUad+Sky+dish%2Caps%2C146&sr=8-5

Look at the 4 outlet stubs at the bottom right of the LNB. That is where the cables from the dish, enter your home and go to the Humax box and/or Sky dish. As has been said, if it's a Sky Q box, you cannot use both Humax and Sky.

This is a Sky Q Hub:

    Comes in white also.

If you settle for the Humax, I see you have poor broadband. In which case, connect to the internet via Ethernet and not WiFi. Word of warning: before I had Fibre and a really good BBand download, I had poor ADSL speeds. The WiFi connection to my HDR-1100S kept dropping out. Using an Ethernet cable, it was fine. This is an Ethernet cable, it connects from your router to the Humax box:

I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

With the SkyQ system, you can have one room connected to the dish with a main box, and the other room with a Mini Box which connects wirelessly to the main one, and allows different users to watch different programmes and different recordings at the same time.

    No cabling between rooms.
