OPEN OFFICE free download/SUN MICROSYSTEMS

I downloaded this software because it is mentioned quite often on TV etc. Has any one else got it? If so, please tell how to start using it. It is just sitting in my Programs file but I can't sort out how to start it off.

How do you mean start it off? Just load one of the applications (e.g. Writer for word processing) from All Programs just like any other application.

(Assuming you have actually installed rather than simply just downloaded the file)

Have you installed it? If you have aprogram called something like OOo_2.2.0_Win32Intel_install_en-US then you need to run that to install the OPenOffice suite. Once it's installed you should have a folder in prgram files call OpenOffice.Org 2.2 (or similar) which will contain all of the various prgrams like Draw, Calc, Writer etc.

Just start one of them up and start using it.

Bill Scarab must have wanted to know the same thing as he has thanked you all.

I discussed in with my grandchildren and their parents today and the oldest grandson said "have you installed it". So, it seems I have not!:o
I will go now and see what I can sort out and thank you all - like Bill has.

Do I take it then that someone like Sun Microsystems would offer this software for free but not make it clear about that just downloading won't do it for me? They must know there are novices doing weird things!

I've just visited the openoffice site and it does have a page with quite clear installation instructions, the link is right next to where you click to download. I guess it's difficult for them to take account of someone not looking for the installation instructions without making it too intrusive for everyone else.

That just means you fit in well here.
philnicandamy (I'm assuming they're more than one person from their name) do seem to be serial thankers. Obviously very appreciative people and I appreciate appreciative people ;)

True, but most software from the internet needs installing before use. Not many (well i say not many) will just run without anything else needed.
Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time
  • A little tip before installing. Make a new folder called Open Office on your HDD and then when you install chose this folder to extract to rather than the default one suggested.

Installing is very simple and once you have installed you will need to run the programe to finish the intsallation off.

If you are planning to send documents to other people then you might want to set the default save as MS office file extensions, this can easily be done from the TOOLS>OPTIONS menu.

You can also set the default language and spellchecker to UK English from here as well.

Open Office is a great Office Suite, even better considering it is free.
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

Got to tell you! I am a coward. After spending over an hour last night trying to sort it out I got rid of it. I asked myself "what do I want it for anyway?", I only write the odd letter and my tax return was just typed on a piece of paper recently and the Revenue sent me £2. A much more important thing is to get rid of this awful keyboard. I have had it only two weeks and the "A" key has never worked properly. I have to go back over all posts and put the As in:rolleyes:

Finally, when I opened my In Box today I had three weird mails from Sun. They were obviously not for me so I told them to stop it and got another email saying I had somehow got myself on their forum mailing list and must unsubscribe. You couldn't make this up.
