Is this a reasonable courier quote for a 60kg item?

Hi,

I purchased a newish digital piano on ebay and will need to hire a third-party courier / delivery company to move it cross-country (285 miles / 4.5h drive + loading & unloading).

From a quick courier comparison via Shiply and Anyvan, I've gotten initial / automatic quotes of £190-400. As the piano's worth £1.8k, I certainly don't mind paying whatever it'll cost to get it to me undamaged. But I'm wondering what you who are experienced with couriers and large item deliveries reckon a "good" price is? Would £200 be expected / too low / too high? I have nothing to compare to so just looking for any advice on this :)

Thank you in advance!

Try getting a quote from Shiply.

The first question is of course how happy are you at the sellers ability to pack securely, have you discussed this with them in Depth? If this was a pick up only then there have been incidences recently where eBay and PayPal claims for non receipt or damage have been found for the seller so you need to make sure that this item is packed exactly to any couriers requirements and fully insured.

Personally for that value I would be hiring my own van and collecting it myself .

Thanks for the pointers. Yeah, I'm definitely choosing a courier which can include (or add) packaging onto the price, so wouldn't be pick-up only. And that offer insurance of course.

If I had a driving licence, yes, I'd consider collecting it myself. I could ask a friend to drive us there, but as the trip would take around 10 hours in total, it's quite a lot to ask even if I'd pay them! Doubt anyone I know would have that kind of time to be honest :D

if courier is going to pack you do rather need to look at the man with a van type of set up, but do make sure you choose a legit one, so many are just setting up using a work van out of hours with no insurance and no come back if your goods are damaged or lost. Also, is the seller happy to let someone into their house to pack this item?

  • I would post it on Shiply and then message the shipping providers asking about protection/insurance before you accept a quote etc., they are usually just cheaper because they are already making similar journeys

It's not my area of expertise by any means but I'm fairly sure there are specialist piano/musical instrument couriers.
