Using two monitors - HDMI cable stopped working.

My computer has three monitor ports - two DP and one HDMI one.

I have two monitors that I run off the computer - one with a DP port and an HDMI (which I've been using) port and the other with a DP port (which I've been using) and a DVI port.

Overnight the HDMI connection has stopped working. The computer just can't detect the monitor attached on this port. I've tried rebooting and restoring my system, both to no avail. If I connect this monitor on the DVI port it works OK.

Would the best approach to solving this simply be to buy a new DP cable, use both DP ports on the computer, and forget about the HDMI connection? I have a DVI cable for the second monitor but of course I can't plug it into the computer.

Many thanks.

the first thing to do is to find if it is the port on the screen or monitor that is faulty.

So plug the monitor into another hdmi source, like someone elses computer, and if it still does not work it is the screen or the cable

it could also be a windows setting where only one screen is enabled too

I have two other computers, neither has an HDMI port. It would seem easier to just give up on the HDMI and buy a second DP cable, rather than go around asking my neighbours if they have a computer I can borrow.

Did you try swapping out the HDMI cable? DP is in my opinion better but at least just temporarily swapping the HDMI cable, using say the one from your Sky box to the TV, would tell you if its the cable at fault.

I don't have another HDMI cable. I have neither a Sky box nor a TV.

There is no difference in video capability between HDMI & DP. The only audio difference is that Hdmi has an audio return channel which I doubt would be used to between computer to a monitor

Funny, it's working perfectly OK today. I blame the computer.

If the OP has two DP capable monitors and if one of them has a DP out port you can daisy chain them so you only need to connect one monitor to the laptop.

Useful if you only have 1 DP port on the computer.

But yes other than that for the vast majority of people there's not much difference between DP and HDMI .

Wrong. DisplayPort version 1.2 can support video resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels (4K) at a refresh rate of 60Hz, and it supports all common 3D video formats. HDMI version 1.4, the most common, supports the same 4K resolution but at just 30Hz. You'll notice the difference.
