Flight cancellation and refund Lufthansa

My son booked a flight from Milan to Seattle, then for personal reasons he had to cancel the flight.
The flight was cancelled less than a month away from departure, the tickets cost £455 and he received £86 refunds.
There is anything he could do to receive more money as a refund?
I'm tempted to phone the company and complain as I think it's a ridiculous amount of money :( on the other hand I know it's better than nothing :)

£86 sounds like a pretty good return, it was undoubtedly a non-refundable fare so all he is entitled to is a (probably partial) refund of taxes forming part of the cost. If he wanted more for changing his mind he should have bought a different class of ticket in the first place.

Too late now but he might as well have waited and hoped for a flight cancellation in which case he could have cancelled his ticket for a full refund. No point complaining to the airline, the refund is determined by the terms and conditions of the ticket your son bought, not what you happen to find a reasonable amount.

When the booking was made different ticket types will have been shown with different fare rules. The cheapest (Basic) tickets are non-refundable - so only some taxes would be refunded
A Basic Plus ticket is more expensive and can be refunded less €190 fee (but costs more to start with)
You don't get the fare rules of the more expensive ticket with the cheaper tickets. I would expect that the refund is calculated exactly as per the fare rules of the flight he selected so their is no complaint to be had.
If the decision to cancel is not covered by travel insurance then there is nobody to reimburse him further

Did he have travel insurance before cancelling the flight? Was the reason for cancellation cover by the policy? That’s the place to be claiming for reimbursement, not the airline.

If your son cancelled his flight surely he is the one who should be calling the airline. (Not that it would do any good as stated already)
