Recommend me a North England holiday

Hi all

Would like to take my parents and my partner and our 2 year old away for a week next Summer. We live in North East Scotland so have been most places in Scotland but other than short breaks in the Lake District and Northumberland, we've not seen much of North England.

Can anyone recommend some gems (or hidden gems) we should consider basically anywhere in North England as far as the Peak District? We enjoy the coast and/or countryside and would want somewhere where things to see and do are in easy reach to keep us amused for a week. Would plan on renting a cottage and will have the car so getting around is no problem although I'd consider all suggestions on location whether small village, town, city, etc. I just don't know the area well enough time draw up a shortlist!

East coast of Yorkshire. Whitby, Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington.

Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Wolds, North Yorkshire Moors.

Most English schools don't finish until third week of July. To avoid crowds go before then.

I'd second Whitby - plenty of holiday cottages, although the central ones often don't have parking.

We've used this holiday let company before and found them helpful

Whitby is nice , but it’s a tourist trap, Staithes is lovely as is Scarborough, we stayed In Filey and went to Whitby for the day and found it hard to park and it was that busy you couldn’t walk round comfortably.

If you are considering Yorkshire and want to see a fair bit I would avoid staying on the coast as you will have a long And can be busy drive to get inland . Staying in the York area opens up more options. York itself is a lovely town and an hours drive can take you to many big houses , abbeys pretty villages market towns or gardens . Or a day at the seaside .

Moving west, how about Kirkby Lonsdale in the Lune Valley.....

Easy to access from the M6.....plenty of scope for all sorts of day trips by car.
