Is my tax right?

Hi everyone,
I'm rubbish with tax and am just looking for some advice please, if anyone can help. I started a new job in february on a salary of 25,000 per year. My taxable income in March was £2083.33 exactly. I was taxed £416 on that and then paid NI. Therefore my take home pay was £1424.
My question is, does that amount of tax seem like a lot? When i work that out over the year, thats £4992 tax on a salary of £25,000, which is 20% of my full salary.
Like I say, im rubbish with this stuff, so please tell me if ive got this wrong, but I thought i got a tax free allowance of £11,850, so doesnt that mean that i should only be taxed on the remaining £13,150 of my salary - which would work out £2630 over the year and £219 per month? I've paid double that.
The thing is I wouldnt have even noticed but after my first month at the new job, which was a trial period,I was given a pay rise to £27,000 per year which i was obviously happy about. But looking at the pay I got at the end of April, my taxable income was £2250 but my take home pay was £1453, meaning they've deducted about £800. Even when you consider NI, thats still a bit steep is it not? The tax free allowance this year has gone up to £12,500, so i should pay 20% tax on £14,500, which works out £2900 a year / £216 a month. So if ive worked that all out right, ive either been over taxed or ive paid nearly £600 NI for one month? My payslips are accessed online and as i'm a new employee they're still trying to set my online account up, so im not able to get onto it yet. I'm going to ring HMRC on Tuesday and hopefully sort this all out, but can someone just advise whether im on the right tracks here please before I make a fool of myself?
Thanks in advance
*Edit - I probably should mention that I left my old job for this one - i'm not working 2 jobs

Your problem is that you are being taxed on either BR or 0T tax codes. Result is you get no tax free allowance.
Did you hand in a P45 if not did you fill in a starter checklist and if so did you select A B or C0 -
416 is 20% of 2083 so you were taxed at BR ( basic rate with no allowances)
Did you hand in your P45 to your new employer? That would allow them to continue your current code number and carry forward your previous pay and tax.
It looks as if they are taxing you at BR ,possibly because you didn't 'hand in a P45. although they should have used the emergency tax code
Contact HMRC and give them details of your leaving date from your old job and details of your new employer and you start date.
Phone lines open at 8am but if you can call a few minutes before 8 you will probably get an answer. Otherwise try the evening. The call centres are open until 8pm.0
