That doesn't sound right. The Transferwise rate right now is $1.30910, rate guaranteed for 24 hours. Sending £1,000 with TFW gets the recipient $1,303.90, by tomorrow. The TFW fee is £3.97.

You are correct I was looking at the Euro RATE
I am so stupid. Thanks for that. It just seemed a terrible rate!

Just an update I have successfully sent the money using TransferWise
The cost.was just £3 97 so a huge saving. My bank charges me £25 ,+ $25 at the other end approx £44
Thank you all and I will continue to use this company for future transactions

Would it be cheaper if your granddaughter had a UK credit card which she uses.
You will then pay the credit card bill in the UK and I am sure the charge will be less than £44

It would almost certainly not be cheaper than Transferwise as the credit card exchange rate, and possibly transaction costs, is very likely nowhere near as good as the Transferwise deal.

Glad to hear you sent the money, and that the MSE Forum could help you finding the best deal. You are quite right, you had a tremendous saving on the fees charged - but don't forget, you also got a better exchange rate than your bank would have given you.

As Colsten mentions, you were also losing on the non-transparent exchange rate margin that banks impose, probably 3%+..!
