Mine gets turned off every summer but every few years it is difficult to re-light
  • Thanks for replies so far.

I don't take cold baths but do take hot showers, just not at home. So I can tolerate no hot water from taps over summer. I can still boil the kettle now and again for things like washing the dishes.

The boiler has an igniter and generally re-lights without a problem, though I haven't had to relight it that often. If the only issue is whether it will re-light again after being off for a few months I'm inclined to turn it off. I know it wont give a big saving but if the boiler isn't being used and turning it off for a few months is generally harmless, why leave it on? Could it even be good for the boiler to be off when not being used?

Before I changed my heating my hot water pilot light used 3 kWh a day and my heating pilot light used 5 kWh a day.

Some websites estimate that it could well be between £60 and £120 per year for the pilot light on an old boiler.

Sounds about right. I worked out the saving as £40 on our boiler by turning it off over the summer.
